District Heating Network Project DC LTO by Fortum

The District Heating Network project aims to connect the data center waste heat in Kirkkonummi to the district heating network in Espoo. This extensive infrastructure project involves planning, engineering, and execution to enhance the region's sustainable energy solutions. Pointscene is used to manage drone data and quantities, providing valuable situational awereness.

With Pointscene we can easily monitor worksite quantities with our drone data. Milla Kivioja, Project Engineer

About the Project

The data center waste heat recovery project requires to be connected to the district heating network. The District Heating Network project aims to connect the data center waste heat in Kirkkonummi to the district heating network in Espoo. This extensive infrastructure project involves planning, engineering, and execution to enhance the region’s sustainable energy solutions.

The project involves installing a substantial length of pipeline, about 5 kilometers, to transport heat from the Kirkkonummi heat pump plant to Espoo. This development is a key part of Fortum’s strategy to leverage waste heat from data centers to provide district heating, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving energy efficiency. The construction process includes several critical phases such as clearing vegetation, excavating trenches, laying and jointing pipelines, and post-construction site restoration.

Project Statistics

  • Client: Fortum Power and Heat Oy
  • Project: District Heating Network Project DC LTO, the connection between Kirkkonummi data center to Espoo.
  • Location: Installations from Kirkkonummi to Espoo, Finland
  • Pipeline Length: The pipeline stretches over 5 kilometers.

Solution

Challenge: Before using Pointscene, monitoring quantities on the worksite was challenging due to the lack of proper tools.

Pointscene is used for:

  • Drone Data Management: Pointscene is used to create & manage drone data, providing high-quality visual and quantitative insights.
    • Fortum is our first customer using our Drone Maps module.

  • Situational Awareness: Enhanced situational awareness through regular updates and data analysis.
  • Quantity Tracking: Facilitated accurate tracking of quantities on the worksite, streamlining project management and decision-making processes.

The use of Pointscene has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of Fortum’s district heating network project management. By providing precise data and situational awareness, the project team can make informed decisions and maintain a high standard of work throughout the project lifecycle.
